Nosso Senhor do Bonfim (bonfim means – a good end, or having a good life) is a figure, who is considered the protector of Bahia, cures diseases and fulfill desires and also has an important in the hybrid African/Christian religious faiths.
The tradition is to tie the strip of fabric around your wrist with three knots, and with every knot, you make a wish. If you continue to wear it until it falls off naturally, then your wish will come true. Locals believe that the ribbons attract good luck and ward off misfortune.
